Nevada Immigrant Coalition and the Nevada Housing Justice Alliance Condemn Anti-Immigrant HUD Proposal
Las Vegas, NV– After multiple failed attempts in 2019, Donald Trump’s Department of Housing and Urban Development(HUD) released a proposed change to federal regulations today that, if implemented, would deny federally subsidized housing to entire families if one member of the household is undocumented. Nevada has the largest share of mixed status households in the country, where 9% of households are mixed status. Nevadans can stand up for their family and neighbors by participating in HUD’s required 60 day public comment window that opens Friday February 20th, 2026.
Noé Orosco, Coalition Coordinator of the Nevada Immigrant Coalition, issued the following statement:
“Nevada is one of the most diverse states in the country, where 1 in 5 Nevadans are immigrants. Immigrants are essential to the fabric of our communities and the workforce that powers our state’s economy. This proposed HUD rule is a shameful attempt to scapegoat immigrants for the on-going housing affordability crisis. Undocumented immigrants are already barred from receiving federal housing assistance and are not eligible for subsidized housing. This proposal would force mixed-status families, including U.S. citizens to choose between staying housed or staying together. It’s clear that this cruel policy design is to further family separation. Nevadans of all backgrounds need solid solutions to the affordability crisis, not more political scapegoating.”
Ben Iness, Coalition Manager of the Nevada Housing Justice Alliance, issued the following statement:
“Every Nevadan deserves a safe and affordable place to call home, regardless of income, race, or immigration status. Nevada’s housing crisis is largely caused by wall street backed firms buying housing in bulk and landlord friendly laws that allow rents to be raised indiscriminately and evictions to happen haphazardly. Trump’s push to evict mixed status families will not solve our housing issues and will only result in more unhoused Nevadans, particularly citizen children. The housing crisis will only be solved with strong tenant protections, rent stability, and regulations on corporate homeownership, so that every Nevadan has a fair shot at affordable and secure housing.”
