Trump’s proposed HUD rule change discriminates against LGBTQ communities
Las Vegas, NV –– Donald Trump’s Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is proposing even more dangerous rule changes. The latest proposed changes would rescind the Equal Access Rule, which guarantees equal access to programs funded by HUD regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, or marital status.
These changes would deepen housing instability and are a sweeping attack on marginalized communities and low-income families who rely on federal housing assistance. The Nevada Housing Justice Alliance is urging Nevadans to submit public comments to defend equal access to affordable housing.
Ben Iness, the Coalition Manager of the Nevada Housing Justice Alliance of Nevada released the following statement:
“LGBTQ+ people are disproportionately impacted by homelessness and housing instability with LGBTQ+ youth making up 40% of the homeless youth population, one in three transgender people experiencing homelessness in their lifetime, and being met with discrimination when trying to access services., HUD’s proposed federal rule changes to remove LGBTQ+ protections will only deepen our housing crisis and further strain our communities.
While this is a direct attack on LBGTQ+ people experiencing homelessness, undoing the Equal Access Rule goes further by threatening all Nevadans seeking life-saving resources. At a time when homelessness continues to rise and access to truly affordable housing is scarce, we can’t afford to needlessly exclude anyone from shelter.
The solution isn’t discriminating against LGBTQ+ individuals and families. Nevada needs strong tenant protections, rent stability, and real accountability for corporate landlords so that everyone has a fair shot at stable housing. We urge Nevadans to speak out during the public comment period and oppose these harmful changes.”

RULE CHANGE: Rescind Equal Access Rule (June 29, 2026):
The proposed rule would rescind the Equal Access Rule, which guarantees equal access to programs funded by HUD regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, or marital status. By rescinding this rule, HUD would allow providers of housing services to turn away transgender, non-binary, and gender nonconforming persons from needed support. Given that nearly one-third of transgender and non-binary people and about one-half of transgender people of color face homelessness at some point in their lives, preserving and enforcing the equal access rule is critical for their safety and security
